My first impression to the AEC LED Speaker is that it appears to be a budget alternative to the JBL Pulse Wireless Bluetooth Speaker as they look literally alike in terms of design, form factor and features, especially the signature programmable LED light that juices up the desktop music experience.
The build quality is okay for its price tag. Both ends and the port panel are covered with rubber rings that help add friction against any surface. The dense metal mesh feels solid to hold the speaker and LED modules intact against any external impacts.
But how does the AEC speaker hold up against advertised and with the mid-high tier speakers that I own? I have been playing around with the speaker throughout the week and here is how I think about it.
First off is the sound output quality. The customer reviews have been awesome on this department and I can definitely echo with them. The delivery is clear and crispy for highs and mids. For day-to-day music and podcast streaming, the AEC speaker is performing perfectly okay. However its disadvantage falls to the base. It is not as punchy as you would expect from the signature of the $200 Bose Revolve. The surround sound is decently good to fill up a bedroom but again, don’t compare with high-end ones that could cost your 10 times higher.
The volume is quite loud considering the portable form factor which is more than sufficient to be audible in a shower. But it starts jigging a bit when the volume level is reaching 90% plus so I do not recommend turning the volume to real up high that could sound unpleasant to many.
As it is completely subjective for one’s liking and rating on audio quality, I have put up two short sample video to showcase how the speaker performs over pop music and podcasts for your own judgment:
Due to the fact that the speaker could only support Bluetooth 3.0, it is not the most power-efficient speaker nor it can hold up strong connection through long distance to connected devices. However, the stability of Bluetooth connectivity has been decent throughout tests with reasonable ranges in the living room.
What’s not working as advertised
Nonetheless, I have come to small issues with a few functionalities as there are couple things that are not working as advertised with my review unit.
First is the FM radio. I was able to turn on the FM radio with the dedicated button. However it is stuck with one single channel which there is no signal for it, at least at my home location. But your mileage may vary.
Second is NFC. I have tested with the latest OnePlus 5 with built-in NFC connectivity but I have no luck to get music through even I put the device on top of the NFC logo on the speaker.
Overall speaking, the AEC BQ615 Pro LED Mini Portable Bluetooth Speaker is not a bad option if you are on budget. Not only that it looks good with the LED lighting when playing music through the speaker, but the speaker also sounds great for its price.
