I will present GMO Detective, a low cost and open Citizen Science project for detection of transgenic elements in food and plants. We will detect the presence of common genetic modifications in corn and soy beans, then discuss the potential scientific and social implications of distributed biosensing. Edwin Wintermute is a research fellow at the CRI in Paris, France. He is the head teacher and organizer of syntheticbiology1.com, a free online course in synthetic biology. He teaches Introduction to Synthetic Biology for the AIV Master’s program at Paris Descartes University and acts as a mentor for the Paris Bettencourt iGEM team. His research interests include the biology of aging, tuberculosis, photobiology, and online education. He holds a PhD in Systems Biology from Harvard University.
