When designing your stamp, you need to make sure the size is going to fit with your ink pad. After you make a few measurements, you can start designing your artwork. I like to use adobe illustrator to make the paths and important them into maya.
Once you have your artwork in your 3D modeling app, you will need to create a cube and hollow it out to create a shell. Now, with your artwork as a separate object, you will need to create an intersection boolean so that the cube has your artwork cut into the bottom, like this. You want to make sure you have at least 2mm of height so that the edges don’t touch the ink pad.
Next, you need to create a lid that will be used to press down the putty into the casting. Make sure your lid is slightly smaller then the casting so it can squeeze out access putty material. This lid can be thin, so 1mm will do just fine.
Ok now its time to export your objects as a STL files and slice them using Replicator G. As for the slicing settings, we’re using SkienForge. We’re going to use .27 for the layer height. We’ll use 60 and 150 for travel rates. 20% infill. Next we’ll use 120c for the platform and 240c for the extruder. We’re using accretion settings, so we’re going to export an X3G.
Now its time to print!
Once your stamp casting is finished printing and cooling down, make sure the lid loosely fits into the casting. If your not happy with the print quality of your artwork, you can always try to thicken up the paths or tone down the details.
To create the stamp, I’m using Amazing mold putty that I picked up from our local Arts n Craft store. It’s is a two part compound that air dries and also works for wax, clay, resin and food. It has a work time of 2-3 minutes and curates in under 20 minutes, so its really quick.
You want to experiment with how much putty material your stamp is going to need. I used something like 6 grams of material for our stamp.
The best part about 3d printing a casting for stamps instead of hand carving them is you can make as many molds as you want from just one cast.
